To scan your car for errors and see its status, you don’t need to take it to the mechanic where they will surely charge you an arm and a leg for a simple diagnosis. Everything what you need to know what is happening in your car in real time are three things: an Android mobile, an OBD2 interface and an application that shows you the information read by the interface. If you have those three things, you are ready to diagnose almost any modern car.
We assume that you already have the Android mobile. The OBD2 interface may not, so take a look at this article with the best OBD2 interfaces to diagnose your car from Android that you can buy. And regarding the application, there are many that you can use, but one of the most popular is Torque for being compatible with the vast majority of OBD2 readers. Next, we explain how this app works and what you can do with it.
Check the status of your car with the Torque Pro app: what it does and how it works
Torque is an application that allows you to view information from a car’s Engine Management System (EMS) sensors. Furthermore, it is capable of read/erase fault codes and monitor the car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU). To show you all this data, the app has to connect via Bluetooth or WiFi to an OBD2 reader that must be installed in your car.
So that, the readings made by the OBD2 interface will be sent directly to your Android device where the Torque app will take care of processing them. Once it does, the app will show you your car information clearly using easy-to-read graphics. And when we say “information”, we mean all this data:
- transmission temperature.
- CO₂ emissions.
- Fault or error codes.
- Revolution per minute (RPM).
- Airflow rate.
- Fuel consumption.
- Among others…
You can see this information in real time from the app. In this way, Torque allows you keep track of car systems like engine, ABS, transmission, airbag and wheels. One really cool thing about the app is that if it detects something out of the ordinary, it will instantly notify you so you can take action before the damage becomes too great. For example, if your car overheats you will receive a notification. This way you can avoid serious failures or accidents.
Another great feature of Torque is that it syncs with your phone’s GPS to tell you the exact time and location a problem was logged. It even has a route recording function with which you can record the routes of your trip to view them later.
What is the difference between Torque Pro and Torque Lite?
The Torque app is only available for Android devices. And you can find it in two versions: Pro and Lite. Torque Lite is a free version that has less features than Torque Pro. On the other hand, Torque Pro is the complete app that has all the functions that we mentioned before, but it is paid. It is worth €3.55 or $4.
Apart from offering limited functionality (nothing beyond ECU codes really), Torque Lite comes with a lot of annoying ads. So the version you need is Torque Pro. That’s the one that comes with all the useful features and really isn’t very expensive, especially when you consider the expenses it can save you from.
Is the Torque Pro app worth it to monitor what’s going on in your car?
The only problem with the Torque Pro app is its interface too old-fashioned for these times. You may think that this is just a minor aesthetic problem, but as you can see from the Play Store reviews, its design has caused it to not work well in the latest versions of Android. Luckily, its developers keep updating it to correct these inconveniences. The one that happened with Android 11, for example, is already corrected.
Another problem is that it is not completely translated into Spanish. But otherwise the app does what it promises and is useful for scanning, diagnosing and controlling what is happening in your car in real time. Besides, it is compatible with most OBD2 readers. We recommend it.
